Performance Opportunities

Everyone who wishes to be considered to perform in the 2012 Solo Competition or in a Master Class (including the Orchestral Excerpts master class) must first register and pay before submitting their audition recording.  Please indicate on your registration form in which events you would like to participate.  If you would like to be considered for BOTH the Solo Competition and the Understanding Orchestral Excerpts master class, please submit both recording requirements for both events.  Please include your name in the mp3 file name and submit to cassie@brasssymposium.com.  The deadline to submit audition recordings is May 15th.  Everyone who submits recordings will receive feedback from NBS Artists via email by May 31st.  Those who are not chosen to participate will receive comments.

The NBS Solo Competition is open to ALL instruments: trumpet (incl. cornet & piccolo), horn, trombone, euphonium and tuba.  The prizes in each division will be awarded to the three most outstanding finalist performances regardless of instrument.  Finalists will be chosen from a preliminary round of recorded audition repertoire* to be submitted via email to cassie@brasssymposium.com no later than May 15th.  After passing the preliminary tape round, finalists will perform their chosen solo piece with piano for NBS participants and the Artist judging panel.  Participants must successfully register for NBS before they can be considered to advance to the finals which will be held in the Bailey Center concert hall on Saturday June 9th in the afternoon.

Understanding Orchestral Excerpts Within the Ensemble (UOEI)

One of our most popular offerings in 2011, this session gives select participants the opportunity to perform side by side with NBS Artists as we play and discuss major orchestral passages from the standard repertoire. The session will feature insightful discussion and tips alongside the performances. What a rush to play such amazing brass excerpts sitting with such amazing brass artists!

Participants who wish to participate should first register successfully for NBS 2012 and then submit a recording of themselves performing the following orchestral excerpts:

  • Trumpet: Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition, Promenade; Mahler Symphony #5, opening; Stravinsky Petrushka, Ballerina’s Dance
  • French Horn: R. Strauss Till Eulenspiegel, opening; Tchaikovsky Symphony #5, Andante Cantabile can alcuna licenza, opening solo; Mendelssohn Symphony #3, 2nd Movement (16 bars after Reh. A to Reh. B)
  • Trombone: Mozart Requiem, Tuba Mirum; Berlioz Hungarian March from The Damnation of Faust; Ravel Bolero solo
  • Bass Trombone: Wagner Ride of the Valkyries; Respighi Pines of Rome, 2nd Movement (seven bars before Reh. 11 thru two bars before Reh. 11); Berlioz Hungarian March (six bars before Reh. 4 thru one bar after 5)
  • Tuba: Wagner Ride of the Valkyries; Prokofiev 5th Symphony, 1st Movement (Reh. # 3 thru 6); Berlioz Hungarian March (Reh. # 4 thru one bar after 5)

Master Classes

Select participants may perform for an NBS Artist in a master class setting with or without piano accompaniment.

To apply, register for NBS 2012 and submit a recording following either of the parameters mentioned above.  If you apply for the Solo Competition or UOEI, your recording may also be used for placement in a master class.  Please indicate in your recording submission email if you would like to be considered to perform in a master class.

Private Lessons

Private lessons may be scheduled at the discretion of the artists and are NOT included in the NBS price of $349. NBS does not set rates for private lessons with NBS Artists nor does NBS guarantee availability of artists for lessons. If a private lesson is desired, please indicate your preference via email to cassie@brasssymposium.com, and we will make every effort to accommodate you depending on Artist availability.
